Anthony Joseph Sabatino

Anthony J. Sabatino dies at 78 Anthony J. (“Tony”) Sabatino, of Westfield, NJ, passed away peacefully during a brief hospital stay on November 16, 2023 due to complications of pneumonia. Tony was born in New York City to Leonardo J. and Victoria Sabatino (née Perotta) on June 20, 1945. He first lived in Manhattan in an apartment building razed to become part of Lincoln Center and moved to New Dorp Beach, Staten Island in 1953 where his family operated a neighborhood grocery store. Tony graduated from Regis High School in Manhattan after commuting all four years from Staten Island. He studied engineering at Manhattan College for almost three years before switching majors (to his parent’s dismay), earning his undergraduate degree in accounting and his MBA at Wagner College. In Wagner College tradition, Tony met Katherine at Demyan’s Hofbrau and were married two years later to the date on June 22, 1968. Tony began his career with Price Waterhouse in NYC in 1968 and became a Certified Public Accountant during his time with the firm. He joined Canadian mining giant Inco, Ltd in 1973 where he began as Tax Manager and held several positions including Comptroller, Treasurer & Corporate Vice President. He retired on December 31, 1999 saying, “I worked a lot in this millennium and I’m taking the next one off!” While not always the most eager traveler, Tony was very well travelled for both work and pleasure. Alone, with Katherine, and often travelling with friends, enjoyed trips and cruises including having visited locales across the United States and Canada including trips to Alaska and Hawaii as well as trips to Australia, Indonesia, Japan, England, Italy, and Mexico. He particularly enjoyed the Caribbean including Grand Cayman and Bermuda- two of his favorites. He was always prepared to have a sports discussion and was an avid, lifelong fan of his New York Teams - the NY Giants, NY Rangers, and NY Mets - and followed college basketball and professional golf closely. He enjoyed fishing with family and friends and was a dedicated golfer who had the fortune to have played some of the world’s best courses. Tony is survived by his wife of 55 years, Katherine Sabatino (née Basile), his sons Anthony L. (Julie) and Mark F. (Ashton). Tony loved being a Grandfather to Anthony and Julie’s daughters, his two beloved granddaughters Victoria Catherine Sabatino and Natalie Isabella Sabatino. Tony will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, cousin, and a dear friend. A celebration of his life is being held on December 16, 2023 at one of his favorite restaurants.
