She was 88. Her death, after a long struggle with dementia, was confirmed by her family. Mrs. Kim was born on June 18, 1937, in Harbin, a city in northeastern China that at the time was under Japanese occupation during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Her father worked as a mechanic for Chevrolet, and her mother, described by relatives as headstrong and resilient, held the household together through political upheaval. Both were devout Christians, a faith that would define Mrs. Kim’s life. The global upheaval of World War II framed her early childhood. By the age of seven, she had witnessed both the dislocation of Korean families fleeing to Manchuria and the world-changing aftermath of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After Korea was divided into North and South in 1945, her family moved to Seoul. As the eldest of three siblings, she often acted as a second mother to her younger brothers, Kisung and Kijum, while excelling academically. But her teenage years were upended again when the Korean War broke out in 1950. She contracted cholera during that time, a near-fatal illness that left lasting health effects. Despite these challenges, she earned a scholarship to Sookmyung Women’s University, where she studied economics. Financial hardships forced her to leave school, but in 1960 she married Kim Dong Uk in what relatives described as a rare “love match” in a time when arranged marriages were the norm. The couple had two sons, Chalu and Cheol Jin, and in the 1970s immigrated to the United States, seeking stability after years of loss and political turmoil. In New York, Mrs. Kim worked to support her husband’s ventures — including an early foray into Korean-style fried chicken and seafood takeout — while also managing informal lending networks within the Korean immigrant community, a role that earned her trust and respect. She was in her 40s when she obtained a driver’s license, trained at a hairdressing school, and began to savor a measure of independence. She also took up skiing in Utah with her sons, delighting in the slopes of Snowbird and Brighton. Through the decades, Mrs. Kim nurtured her role as a grandmother. She doted on her grandchildren, Scott and Nicole, cheering their milestones and, in later years, welcoming their partners, Madison and JP, as family. Known for her enormous appetite and her fondness for Snoopy, she delighted her grandchildren with both her generosity and humor. Her faith deepened in her later years, as she became active in the Presbyterian Church of New Jersey. Even after her husband’s death in 2012, she held fast to a life of resilience, finding joy in travels, including a long-awaited trip to the American West Coast. “She was love itself,” her family wrote in a statement, describing her as both a caretaker and a warrior, someone who fought to survive and to give meaning to every turn of life. Mrs. Kim is survived by her sons, Chalu, of Batu Karas, Indonesia, and California; and Cheol Jin, of Fort Lee, N.J.; also by her brothers, Ki Sung Kim and Ki Joon Kimas well as her grandchildren, Scott and Nicole, and their partners.
