July 6, 1927 - March 19, 2020
She was born in Treptow, Berlin, Germany July 6, 1927, to Alfred and Edith Ernicke. Alfred died of a blood clot in 1937, 4 years after Hitler was in power. She had an older brother, Karl, and sister, Ursula, and their dog Mielo, a boxer. After Krystalnacht, her grandmother (who died in Theresienstadt Concentration Camp) and later her mother (who survived Theresienstadt) were taken by the Nazis. She remained protected by neighbors who hid her from the Nazis. Later she worked at a Prison Camp in Berlin. She was able to visit her brother in Spandau Prison in Berlin before he was transferred to Buchenwald Concentration Camp where he ultimately was gassed to death. When the war ended, she was still in Berlin subject to the take-over by the Russians. Because of the Berlin Airlift, she had to beg Russians for food. Ultimately she was saved by Gunther Weinstock, a Master Sargent in the US Army who was a Berliner by birth and who help organize the Airlift. She was hired as his secretary, fell in love and later married him in Boston. After 2 children were born, Diana and Steven, she was struck with more tragedy when her husband died of a heart attack. Left with many bills to pay, she studied and became a beautician and colorist. When her hands started to become arthritic, she studied again and worked at a Credit Union for Litton Industries. She remarried to Edward Epp and lived happily (and thankfully) until his death in 2013. She devoted the remaining of her time to animals of all kind, and cats and birds, in particular. Eva leaves her children, Diana and her husband Frank, and Steven and his wife Terri, 4 grandchildren, Erin and Jonathan, and Garrett and Ryan, and 4 great grandchildren, Samantha and Santino and Ana and Noah. I know of no one who was kinder, caring and gentler despite the hardships and horror she endured. Many will miss her.
