Edmund John Beirne's Obituary
Edmund John Beirne, 88, passed away peacefully and supported by his loved ones, on April 4, 2024, in Branchville, NJ. He was the husband of the late Maureen Beirne, and together they shared 22 years of marriage.
Edmund “Eddie” Beirne was born in Elphin, County Roscommon, Ireland, on November 20, 1935, and was the son of Bartholomew and Mary Kate Beirne. He attended Aughrim National School, also in County Roscommon. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1958 with dual citizenship as his father Bartholomew was born and spent his early childhood in the U.S. before returning to Ireland. When Eddie left Ireland and moved to Jersey City, New Jersey, he was employed by the Port Authority Trans Hudson Corporation, where he was a locomotive engineer with the PATH trains for over 50 years.
Eddie was a long time member of Corpus Christi Parish, in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ. He enjoyed gardening, a beautiful pastime and vocation he passed to his son, John Beirne, as well as building, woodworking and being together with his many long time friends and family. Eddie was always someone who could be counted on to lend a hand whenever it was needed, and was able to be relied on. He was an avid reader of history, politics and natural sciences. Eddie was well known for his spirited “Argu-conversations” with his best friend Eddie Sexton, and Brother in Laws Patrick Mcdermott and Donald Slattery, who predeceased him. He formed long lasting friendships with many in the Beirne, Mc Dermott, O’Malley, Doyle and Slatterly clans.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John and Hilary Beirne, and his grandchildren Cassia (12) and Callan (9). He is also survived by his siblings, Noreen, Anna, Maura, Mark & Tony. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Tara, Bernadette, Patrick, Deirdre, Caroline, Sarah, Helena, Tina, Rita and his Godson Michael, and predeceased by his niece Angela. He was a wonderful uncle, Great Uncle, and cousin to his family members, and will be dearly missed by all.
The wake will be held at Hennessey - Heights Funeral Home (232 Kipp Ave Hasbrouck Heights, NJ) on April 9th from 4 pm to 8 pm. There will be a mass at Corpus Christi Parish (215 Kipp Ave Hasbrouck Heights, NJ) at 10 am on April 10th, followed by his burial at Holy Cross Cemetery (340 Ridge Road North Arlington, NJ).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Eddie.
