Fereidoon Mahdi's Obituary
Dr. Fereidoon Mahdi, 83, of Nutley, passed away Monday, February 11, 2013 at Clara Maass Medical Center after a long illness. Born in Iran, he brought his family to Nutley in 1971 and established his home and medical practice.
Dr. Mahdi faithfully served as a local physician and surgeon in the community of Nutley and practiced at Clara Maass Hospital for over 20 years which was his home away from home. He was known for his humbleness and generosity among his patients and colleagues.
After the tragic loss of his youngest daughter, Fereshteh, he retired and became an avid reader of arts and philosophy and authored two books. He loved to entertain and cook for his friends. He stayed in touch with his childhood friend of 62 years, Dr. Rezai over the years by writing letters and sharing his adventures. He enjoyed music, played the violin, recited poetry and loved to spend hours in the New York City public library. As a young man, he taught himself French by reading Les Miserables in its original French text and translated a medical surgical journal from French to Farsi in his 3rd year of medical school.
Beloved husband of Dr. Zahra Mahdi Barkhordari with whom he shared a love of books and compassion for the poor. Together, they would routinely cook for the homeless and feed the orphans in Iran. He is also survived by his beloved children, Dr. Frouzandeh Mahdi, Dr. Lawrence Mahdi, Catheryne Majewski and Ferdos Mahdi; his sons-in-law, Dr. Mahmoud Haery and John Majewski; his daughter-in-law, Lily Mahdi and his grandchildren, Leila, Reza and Yalda Haery, Kristina, Kevin and Christopher Majewski and Yasaman and Payman Mahdi. He will be sadly missed by his caregiver, Paul Vargas.
