Fernando De Jesus Arenas Echavarria's Obituary
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Fernando De Jesus Arenas Echavarria on May 3, 2025, at 70. Born in 1954 in La Estrella, Colombia, Fernando was a loving husband to Gloria Arenas and a devoted father to Evelyn and Steven.
He will be remembered for his calm demeanor, generous spirit, and unwavering optimism. Fernando's strong work ethic, infectious smile, and deep love for his family—especially his grandchildren, Raquel and Cielo—touched everyone who knew him. His passion for soccer, music, and travel brought him joy throughout his life.
Fernando was the only one among his 13 siblings to become a U.S. citizen and to purchase a home in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he lived with his wife, Gloria. In the eyes of his family, he was the embodiment of the American dream—achieving success through perseverance, dedication, and the courage to seize opportunities. This was among his proudest accomplishments.
He worked as a taxi driver for Greenwich Taxi for over 30 years, primarily during night shifts. He often shared that what he enjoyed most about the job was the opportunity to explore new places. Despite living far from his homeland, Fernando never hesitated to support his extended family in Colombia.
Fernando is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria Arenas, his son, Fernando Steven Arenas, his daughter, Evelyn Arenas Weiss, and his grandchildren, Cielo Weiss and Raquel Weiss.
A memorial service will be held on May 9 at 10:00 AM ET at St. Mary’s Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in support of research to cure non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Fernando will forever be remembered as a hero by his family—for the sacrifices he made and the love he gave to ensure they had opportunities he never had growing up in Colombia
