As everyone who knew Professor Herbert Kellogg during his or their careers agrees, he was the proverbial “perfect gentleman”. On top of that, he was a giant in his field and produced a great deal of seminal work, which is cited to this day. A clear sign of his greatness is that even those who did not have any direct interaction with him hold him in the highest esteem. The metallurgy profession has lost a distinguished member, which the entire community mourns.

Dr. Herbert H. Kellogg was a giant in the field of Chemical Metallurgy. He held the Stanley Thompson Professor Emeritus of Chemical Metallurgy at Columbia University. Kellogg Diagrams (predominance diagrams) are named in his honor. He was a member of The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (TMS) where he was inducted into the 1972 Class of TMS Fellows. He was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 1978 cited for his expertise in Materials Engineering and Earth Resources Engineering. Dr. Kellogg published many landmark technical papers and texts.

I am tremendously grateful for Dr. Kellogg's work and frequently use concepts and methods for presenting thermochemical information first suggested in his work. He, a renowned and honored expert, was always gracious to me, a young professional.
