Mary Ellen Scallion's Obituary
Scallion, Mary Ellen, 84, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away July 14th in Montclair, NJ. She was born on July 24, 1928 in Lewiston, ME to Daniel Ivory and Mary McCarthy. Devoted wife of the late Nicholas Scallion. Cherished mother to Gerald, Anne, Mark, Matt and Nancy. Beloved grandmother to 12 beautiful grandchildren whom she loved with all her heart.
She earned her bachelor's degree from Washington College in Chestertown, MD in 1950. She started her career as a social worker for the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Baltimore. After she gave birth to her children, she returned to work as a nursery school aide, ultimately becoming director of St. John's Nursery School in Hagerstown. She retired in 1995. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes in West Orange, NJ and St. Ann's Catholic Church in Hagerstown. She was also a member of the Washington County Museum Singer Society and the American Association of University Women AAUW. Her interests included her grandchildren, reading, shopping, traveling and playing bridge. Mary Ellen was a joyful person whose spirit touched all she encountered.
Funeral mass will be offered on Friday, July 19 at 9:30am at Our Lady of Lourdes, West Orange. Final services will be held at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, on August 1st.
